Janitor AI Review 2026: Free Chat, Fiddly Upgrades
Checked October 27, 2026 against Janitor AI's Terms of Service (last updated October 8, 2026) and its US App Store listing. Memory and proxy details come from Janitor's community guides and independent reviews, and are labelled as such.
Verdict: Janitor AI is a huge library of community-made characters that you can chat with for free on its own model, JanitorLLM (JLLM). Its terms make it adults-only. Free really means free, but it comes with queues, short memory and, if you want stronger models, a do-it-yourself “proxy” setup with your own API key. If you'd rather pay a small fixed price for one companion that just works, Candy AI ($47.88 a year) is the simpler choice. Janitor has no affiliate deal with us.
Janitor AI in Brief
- What it is: a character chat and interactive-story platform where users write the characters (“bots”) and anyone can start a chat with them. Official site: janitorai.com.
- Who runs it: JanitorAI Inc.
- Age rule: its terms say the platform is only for users 18 and over, and accounts believed to belong to under-18s can be closed.
- Where: the website, plus an official iPhone app called “Janitor: Interactive Stories”, rated 18+ on the App Store.
- Price: free to use. The paid tier, Janitor+, is listed at $12.99 a month as an in-app purchase on the US App Store; on the web the price is shown at checkout.
What Janitor AI Costs
| Option | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free (JanitorLLM) | $0 | Chat with public characters on Janitor's own model, with queues at busy times |
| Janitor+ | $12.99 a month (US App Store); web price at checkout | Longer memory, priority replies and access to more models, per independent reviews |
| Your own API key (“proxy”) | Whatever your model provider charges; some free models with daily caps | An outside model of your choice, on bots marked “proxy allowed” |
Janitor+ features are from third-party reviews; Janitor doesn't publish a public feature list. Its terms say subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel.
The Limits You'll Hit
- Short memory. Janitor's community guides and independent reviews put JLLM's context at roughly 9,000 tokens, so long roleplays forget early details. We couldn't find an official spec page confirming the figure.
- Queues and errors. JLLM is labelled beta. At busy hours, expect waits and failed replies; “Janitor AI down” is a common search.
- The proxy chore. Using a better model means opening an account with a model provider, then pasting an endpoint URL, an exact model name and an API key into Janitor's API settings. Free models at providers come and go and carry daily request caps.
- Quality varies by bot. Characters are written by users, so two bots can feel completely different.
Privacy and Safety
- Proxies send your chats elsewhere. With your own API key, your messages go to that provider under its privacy terms. Avoid public “reverse proxies” run by strangers: everything you type passes through their server.
- Protect your API key. A leaked key can run up charges on your account. Use one with a spending limit and replace it if you think it's been exposed.
- Read the fine print. Janitor's terms include an arbitration agreement and a class-action waiver, and ban unofficial clients and modified versions of its apps.
Pros and Cons
Pros: genuinely free; an enormous character library; adults-only by its terms; you can bring nearly any model if you set up a proxy.
Cons: short memory on the free model; queues at peak times; proxy setup is fiddly and can cost money; paid feature details aren't published.
Janitor AI vs a Paid Companion App
Janitor is best if you enjoy browsing lots of characters and don't mind tinkering. If you'd rather have one companion with images and voice and no setup, Candy AI is $47.88 a year ($3.99 a month) with unlimited chat on paid plans, which works out cheaper over a year than four months of Janitor+ at the App Store price. ourdream.ai ($119.88 a year, 1,000 dreamcoins a month) is the pick if you want to generate images and video of your character.
